What’s shakin’ my spanko peeps? Anyway, I had been corresponding with the fabtastic Kitty from Kitty’s Exotic Paddles, and recently discovered her husband Bob aka: BobDJ, has been dj’ing and spinning sizzling tracks of booty-shaking, rump-bumping, party-rockin’ tunes on the burgeoning spanking party circuit for over a decade. Sweet!
So you see, I thought, that might be a cool cherry red blog post–how does one end up becoming the go-to DJ for spanko shindigs? All I know is right now I’m in the mood to groove to Akon’s “Smack That” . . .or maybe bust out to this summer’s biggest hit: LMFAO’s infectious “Party Rock Anthem.” [ADDDENDUM: Check out the comments section, where Bob lists the most popular spanko-themed tunes.]
Memories of a Spanko DJ
Written By BobDJ for The Cherry Red Report
Well, it’s mid summer, the parties are in full swing, and I am once again preparing to trek out to Vegas for the big Shadow Lane party. This will be my 12th year as their DJ, and I am very proud of that.
Being someone who gets the “been there, done that” attitude pretty quick, I have been amazed at how the returning party goers, as well as the non-stop flow of first timers, helps to keep these parties fresh, exciting, and at the same time comforting. After all, once you have revealed that you’re into spanking to a room full of like-minded, supportive people, most anything else you could ever tell them just seem like small potatoes.
That said, I’d like to recall the first time Tony Elka, co-Founder of Shadow Lane, and I discussed the topic of my being their DJ. It was 1998. But first, a little background:
I had become aware of Shadow Lane in 1989 through an ad in Penthouse Forums “Variations” edition, which, in the pre-internet days, was a wealth of brain candy for the kink-minded.
I was delighted by the fact that, with Shadow Lane, I didn’t have to wade through gawdawful fetish material that was poorly imaged, looked somewhat non-consensual, and certainly didn’t seem to come from anyone or anyplace I could relate to.
In the early days, it was a real mixed bag of miscellaneous kinks packaged in shoddy fashion, and rarely available outside the limits of the local seedy adult bookstore. Thank goodness those days are far behind us. So I became a Shadow Lane customer and anxiously awaited their latest releases.
In the mid-1990’s, after dabbling in bands and DJ’ing the occasional gig, I decided to step-up my musical game by creating “Bob Sloane’s Music Shuttle,” advertising in the yellow pages and within weeks of the books being published, was accepting gigs and earning my keep as a party/wedding & corporate event DJ.
But back to Tony & Shadow Lane…..
Tony was returning my inquiry about a video, and got my voicemail, which contained my DJ business in the outgoing message. In his message to me, he answered my questions and then mentioned “I understand you’re a DJ, and your “one of us” let’s talk about your doing one of our parties.” Shortly thereafter we inked a deal for me to DJ Saturday night for the Palm Springs Shadow Lane party in 1999.
I brought my then-girlfriend Vanita to the Friday night vendor fair and told her before entering the room that I had no idea what to expect, and that if she was uncomfortable, we could leave early and I would just return Saturday for my gig. As most of you can already imagine, the Friday night Vendor Fair was a relaxed, fun event, complete with all the accoutrements we have come to expect. Plus, lots of public play, which amazed me.
I had pondered “what kind of music will these people like?, I don’t even know what ‘spanking music’ is?
But after speaking casually with some of the guests, I quickly came to the conclusion that these are not “spanking people” these are normal, every day people, who just happen to like spanking.
So as Saturday night began, I picked the best of my mainstream material, read the crowd, and just ran the playlist like a vanilla party, and the people loved it! But how did Tony, Eve & Butch feel about all this? I don’t know if I was playing what they had in mind. But during the evening, as the dancefloor began to fill up, and the “flow” between DJ and dancers took hold, Tony walked up to me and said “Same time next year?” And of course the rest is history.
Well, not exactly.
In the 12 years since my first Shadow Lane party, I met & married Kitty, helped her launch “Kitty’s Exotic Paddles” in 2000, DJ’d for several other parties, including DomCon in L.A., Boardwalk Badness in Atlantic City, and Texas All-State in Dallas. I have also created “Uncle Bob’s Woodshed,” a Clips4Sale studio.
Coming up after the Labor Day weekend with Shadow Lane, we’ll fly out in October to DJ the Crimson Moon party in Chicago, a return to Dallas for the Texas All-State party in 2012, and Tampa Tanners in February, 2013. Kitty & I are also planning a return of our own very popular “Seaside Swats” party in April, 2012 in San Diego, and of course, back to Shadow Lane, my DJ home turf in Las Vegas.
Thank you, everyone, for bringing me back, year after year, don’t forget to post your song requests on the Shadow Lane message board, or contact me directly through FetLife (BobDj).
